A Minimum of 98 Palestinians Have Died in Custody Since October 2023, Statistics from Israel Shows
According to figures released by Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have died while in custody beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has reported that the real figure is almost certainly substantially higher, as a result of hundreds of unaccounted for people in Gaza.

During May of this year, a defense forces registry monitoring all combatants in Gaza, a list of in excess of 47,000 named individuals, documented merely 21 fatalities in confinement. By that point, 65 Gazans from Gaza had perished in prison.

An effort to try others over a brutal attack involving sexual violence resulted in political demonstrations and the apprehension of Israel’s top military lawyer, with the alleged perpetrators now requesting that charges against them be dismissed.
No Legal Action
“Despite this large quantity of fatalities, during 24 months not one individual has faced arrest,” the official noted. “There have been no prosecutions over any fatality.
“As long as these measures are being applied, every Palestinian in custody is at peril, also the physically well individuals, even the youth who have no health problems.”
Notable Incidents
Several casualties in detention have been publicly known, for instance a middle-aged healthcare leader who perished in confinement after 120 days in custody.
An inmate held with the victim testified that he was taken to the yard by correctional officers just prior to his death, clearly wounded and exposed from the lower body. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.
Additional detainees who lost their lives in detention in Israel are unidentified. Detention administrators and armed services supplied analysts with the figure of deaths in confinement, and limited further data such as the facility where they lost their lives, but without the detainees’ identities.
Recognition Difficulties
In 21 cases, mostly people from Gaza, analysts were unable to match the few details given by government bodies to a death recorded by advocacy bodies, either through testimony from freed prisoners or accounts in the press.
The inmates’ next of kin could be unaware about their relatives’ casualties as well, as Israel has created obstacles to locate detainees it is confining.
