Astronaut Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
